Zviko Mhakayakora is a Curator, Graphic Designer and Performer who grew up in Harare, Zimbabwe. She completed a BDES in Graphic Design at OCAD University (Toronto, ON) in 2016.
Zviko was the recipient of one of three Diversity and Equity Excellence Awards for Students at OCAD. Under the mentorship of Shamina Chherawala Andrea Fatona and Sheila Sampath, Zviko curated Pixelation, her first exhibition. Pixelation featured 11 artists and designers, was held in the lobby of OCAD University and attracted over 150 people at the opening night. Pixelation has also been shown at Artscape YoungPlace.
Zviko and SoTeeOh co-curated Sawubona as part of The Heard Festival. This exhibition, a first of its kind in Canada in that it featured exclusively 30 Black Photographers and was held at Daniels Spectrum. The headliner for the festival was Young Paris, the US based musician signed to ROCNATION.
Zviko curated Where Is Home? an exhibition which featured 5 artists and designers who explore various notions of home and was shown at XPACE. Where is home? was part of the Toronto Design Offsite Festival 2017.
Zviko worked with Trinity Square Video and curated Decussation: Experiences Through Video as part of Long Winter at the Gladstone Hotel. This exhibition featured 4 artists and designers.
Zviko curated Chronology: The timeless lens through which we analyze acts of silencing racialized bodies, which featured two artists and was shown at The Drake Hotel, Drake One Fifty, Drake Devonshire Inn and The Drake General Store.
Zviko enjoys researching and interrogating how contemporary art and design can be used as a tool to challenge the issues linked to the effects of colonization. Graphic Design serves as a platform through which Zviko has learnt to see the world differently.
